Introduction

One of our main goals is to protect our users' privacy. We realize that many of our users prefer to be anonymous, and, as much as possible, we try to limit the amount of information users are required to provide in order to use the site. Please read and understand this policy, as it outlines what types of information we collect about you and how we use it.

We collect limited information about you.

We want it to be possible to browse ShareMyShit anonymously. That means we strictly limit the amount of information we collect about you. Many features of the site do not require a registered account to access. We allow users to register accounts without providing any sort of personal information (such as email address or real name). We do automatically collect some information as part of our normal site operations, and we optionally collect some personal information to give you access to certain features of the site.

Server Log Files

When you visit the ShareMyShit.com website, our servers log typical technical data about your visit, such as what browser and operating system you use, which pages you requested, or the URL of the referring web site you linked to us from. We aggregate this information for our analytics tracking, and we use it to make sure the website and servers are running smoothly, but we do not (and cannot) use it to individually identify you. We do not store IP addresses.

Cookies

We use cookies for a few things:

1. To track your acceptance of the terms of service and your entrance past the site's main warning message.
2. To remember certain view preferences you've made on the site, such as which tab to display on the homepage, or which alert boxes you wished to dismiss.
3. (for our registered users) To keep you logged into the site and store certain user data.

Account Registration

When you sign up for an account, you can optionally provide your email address. This not required, and makes us able to reset your password or contact you if there is a technical issue with your account. You have the ability to choose a username and provide a short bio for the site. We encourage you to not use any personally-identifiable information in your profile, as it is publicly visible on the site. You can optionally connect your Twitter account to your ShareMyShit account, which we use to optionally tweet your submissions. Signing up for an account creates a public profile for you on the site, which other users can access to see your activity on the site. See our FAQ for more information about account registration.

Your Shit

ShareMyShit allows you to post pictures of your shit. You do not need to be signed into an account in order to do this. We recommend that you use discretion and not post anything that would personally identify you. One benefit of posting via a registered account is that you can delete a photo you submit. If you post anonymously, there is no way for you to delete a submission, because we have no way of verifying that you are actually the original poster. We generally do not delete shit posted anonymously, but we make exceptions on a case-by-case basis. Please contact us if you need help.

Contacting Us

We make it possible to contact us from the site. If you do so, we will store your name and email address in our email boxes as we would with any other email.

Analytics

We use an application called Piwik, an open-source alternative to Google Analytics, to aggregate usage patterns and get general information about the visitors to our site. This includes things like browser and operating system, screen size, geographic region, referring websites, and any search terms used to find our site. We do not use this information to track our users individually. We run the Piwik software on our hosting service and do not share analytics information with any third parties.

We do not share your email address with third parties.

Providing us with your email address is optional, and if you do, we will only use it as needed to provide features of the site and communicate with you. We will never share your email address with third parties without your express permission, unless required by law or our good-faith belief that we need to do so in order to comply with legal process. In the event that we do need to provide your email address to comply with law or legal process, we will attempt to notify you first.

You have control over your information.

We try to give you as much control as possible over the information you provide to us:

1. You do not need to provide any personal information to use many of the website's features.
2. If you have signed up for an account, you may change your information or delete your email address at any time.
3. If you want to delete your account and all related submissions from the site, we would be happy to do so on your behalf. Please contact us.
4. If you have connected a social network to your account, you can remove it by logging into your account on that social network and de-authorizing the ShareMyShit website from your connections. Contact us if you need assistance with this.

We've taken steps to keep your information secure.

Our site and hosting provider use multiple layers of security to prevent unauthorized access to our data. We minimize the personal information we store about our users, and we do not store IP addresses. We make a good-faith effort to maintain the security of our website, web services, database and servers, although we cannot guarantee complete security.
